Manuscript leaf, prayers for time of war, for protection of the city and the success of Caesar Franz the First. [Italy, late 18th century or early 19th century]. At the top and at the end of the leaf are instructions for reciting Psalms and prayers. Italian titles. Includes two prayers. The first is a prayer for salvation during war: "It shall be your will…that you shall be filled with mercy on the residents of this city… and save us from our enemies and from all those who give bad counsel or rise against us… and you shall cut down all the thorns that surround the rose… and give strength and might to the battlers…". The second is a prayer for the success of Caesar Franz the First: "…Please King of Kings, strengthen and give courage to His Majesty our Master King Franzisko Primo [Franz the First] and Her Majesty the Queen his wife… and to all ministers of the Exalted and Majestic Austrian Kingdom…". Apparently, this is alluding to Franz the Second, Caesar of the Holy Roman Empire, called also Franz the First Caesar of Austria (1768-1835), during the times of the "Napoleon wars". Leaf, 31 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains, folding marks and tears to folds.
