Title: Manuscript log book kept on a voyage from England to China and return Author: Barnard, Charles(?) Place: Various places Publisher: Date: 1814-1815 Description: Approx. 66 leaves, plus nearly that many unused leaves. Printed log forms filled in ink. 37x23 cm. (14¾x9”), split calf. Log book likely kept by Charles Barnard, commander of the Honourable East India Company ship Wexford, during a voyage from England to China. The log begins with a listing of the ships crew, 3½ pages, giving names, capacity, and, most interesting, "Dead, Run or Discharged." Some "fell overboard and drowned," others "ran in China," a large number were "Press'd by H.M.S. Doris" or other Royal Navy vessels. All of these casualties required replacements, and there is following a list of five "Seamen ship'd in China," we have an inserted leaf giving the "Chinese Seamen ship'd in China." After several pages detailing the outfitting of the vessel, the Wexford departs, reaching Macao in September of 1814. The return voyage ends abruptly, and mysteriously, the ship still apparently at sea. With the bookplate of the South Sea Library of Alvin and Ethel Seale, San Francisco, 1936; a typed label, is taped to the spine. Lot Amendments Condition: Overall, very good. Item number: 211799
