MANUSCRIPT CELESTIAL GLOBE by Kicciucli. [Rome: Late 18th Century]. A manuscript celestial library globe, diameter 19½ inches (50cm), overall height 23½ inches (60cm). The slightly irregular papier-mache globe overlaid with two sets of 12 paper gores, laid to the poles with two additional gore strips pasted over part of the constellations of Balena and Aves/Aries, lines of celestial longitude and latitude ruled in sepia ink, polar meridians and tropics in dotted lines, the celestial equator graduated in degrees. The whole globe elaborately drawn with over 1700 stars. The orders of magnitude, represented by the size of the star symbols, carefully drawn constellation figures decorating the whole sphere coloured in a pale blue, red and green washes, gores very lightly varnished, (upper hemisphere slightly dust stained). Metal axis with wooden cap at each pole, wooden meridian circle, one face papered with gratiaule in degrees. The globe mounted in a contemporary Italian wooden stand. The octagonal horizon bar supported by 4 tapered legs with carved cross-stretchers and centre post (cross-stretchers cracked, some damage to meridian circle). The horizon bar is papered with manuscript text in Italian describing the stars and their orders of magnitude, ending with the final statement 'Registri del coma quella di occupazione del fino secolo il Kicciucli.. e 5359. P.G.M.'. An interesting late 18th Century Italian celestial globe following the traditions of manuscript globe-making often associated with the religious orders in Italy in the 17th century. This example was probably constructed in Rome to replace a R.C.A. celestial globe formerly in this stand.
