Manufacturer: Rookwood Artist: M. A. Daly Description: Rare carved vase with arrowroot decoration done in what may well be Flowing Glaze by Matt Daly in 1900. What do we know about Flowing Glaze other than the fact that Rookwood counted it among its glaze lines in 1900. We feel confident that Flowing Glaze is a derivative of the Iris glaze line but no definitive examples show up in Rookwood photographs. References to Flowing Glaze can be found in Rookwood literature and especially interesting are notes in Burt’s “2,292 pieces of early Rookwood Pottery in the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1916.” Item 153 in the 1900 listings refers to a Flowing Glaze vase, shape 904 C, done by Daly. Is this that piece? No way to tell but this vase does have an interesting cascading effect between the glaze and the background color. Either Iris or Flowing Glaze, the vase can stand on its own merits with yellow and white flowers and green leaves encircling the vase. Marks include the company logo, the date, shape number 904 B, an incised W for clear glaze and the incised full signature of Mr. Daly. Height 13 inches. Overall crazing and a small open bubble at the base. A mystery perhaps but a nice one to contemplate.
