Per festeggiare gli augustissimi sponsali . . . di Leopoldo Cesare e di Claudia Felice arciduchessa d'Austria . Mantua: the Osanna family, Ducal printers, [1674]. Large 8 o (269 x 195 mm). Etched frontispiece with allegorical figures and 5 etched folding plates showing scenes from the drama by G. M. MITELLI after FABRIZIO CARINI MOTTA on guards. (Very light spotting, mainly to lower margins of text, two folding plates with short, neatly repaired tears at inner margin.) 19th-century olive morocco, covers with gilt triple fillet border, spine gilt-lettered, gilt turn-ins. This rare work describes the festivities arranged in Mantua for the wedding of LEOPOLD I (1640-1705), Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary and Bohemia, to his second wife CLAUDIA FELICITAS (1653-1676), Archduchess of Austria, in 1674 and the play performed during the celebration. Written and directed by Bonacossi, Torneo a'piedi tells the story of Bellona, Mars, Venus, Pallas and Jove, who appear to bless the marriage of the couple. The plates, after stage designs by Fabrizio Carini-Motta, a painter at the court of Mantua and also prefect of theaters, depict scenes from the spectacle, which was originally intended to introduce a tournament. However, because of the short winter evenings, the play and the tournament eventually took place on different nights.
