Manned Mars Mission Working Group at Los Alamos, 3 volumes Author: Place: Publisher: National Aeronautics and Space Administration Date: 1985-1986 Description: Three volumes: Duke, Michael B. and Paul W. Keaton, ed. Manned Mars Missions Working Group / Los Alamos National Laboratory / Summary Report. 85 pp. Illustrated. Original wrappers. With tipped-in correction sheet. “Based on Working Papers presented at Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama, June 10-14, 1985 (NASA M001, May 1986). Manned Mars Missions Working Group papers / A Workshop at Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama: Volume I, Section I-IV, June 10-14, 1985. x, 1-494 pp; Volume II, Section V - Appendix, xi, 495-1049 pp. Extensively illustrated with drawings, sketches and graphs. Original wrappers, spiral bound. (NASA M0002, June 1986). Wernher Von Braun first detailed a plan for a manned mission to Mars in the 1950s. After the success of the lunar landings, he proposed a crewed mission to the planet as the next major focus of NASA’s manned space program. That goal was set aside in favor of development of the Space Shuttle. In 1981, a series of conferences were held to explore the Mars mission concept. This languished until recently, when the “Case for Mars” was again taken up in earnest – only to be preempted once again, by the more immediate goal of returning to the Moon. The workshop held in 1985, under the joint auspices of NASA and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, brought together more than 100 government and academic experts to " examine the impact of new and emerging technologies on Mars mission capabilities…" General discussion and conclusions were outlined in the Summary Report, with detailed descriptions of each of the 90 papers presented at the workshop in the massive two volumes of the complete report. The report covered the rationale for a manned mission to Mars; transportations issues; space vehicle configuration; infrastructure for landed crew on the Mars surface; related scientific investigations of astronomy, exobiology, planetary resources; life science, medical and psychological issues; technology requirements including telecommunications and propulsion; political and economic issues (meaning budget and cost); and the impact of other programs such as robotics and space station support. These scarce volumes remain fundamental documents for planning a human Martian landing in future. Lot Amendments Condition: Ownership signature on title pages; small highlighting on one index page of 2nd volume, which also has bent corners on the last 100 pages of text and rear wrapper; very good.
