'The Sea of Galilee from a sketch done on the spot' and 'Beer or berejeek on the Euphrates the place from whence the Expedition started from a sketch done on the spot', c. 1850, 2 pencil and watercolour sketches on wove paper, both initialled in pencil by the artist to lower margins and one titled 'Berejick on the Euphrates', each 165 x 235 mm, laid down on old and chipped album leaves with manuscript captions in another hand to lower mounts (Quantity: 2) Malan, a Geneva-born Anglican divine, polyglot and Orientalist, first travelled to Palestine in the early 1840s, documenting his journey with sketches and watercolours. He accompanied Layard for parts of his Nineveh journey and a number of plates in his books are based on Malan's drawings.
