London: William Bowyer for Christopher Bateman, 1st September 1717. 8 o (219 x 130 mm), 2 volumes bound in one. 2 engraved plates of early printers' devices, woodcut head- and tail-pieces. French green morocco gilt of the third quarter of the 18th century, triple fillets on sides, spine decorated in compartments, roll-tooled border on turn-ins, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, (slight wear at corners). Provenance : Louis-Léon-Félicité, comte de Lauraguais, subsequently duc de Brancas (engraved armorial bookplate, Debure sale 11th June 1770, lot 770) -- Antoine-Augustin Renouard (name lettered at foot of front cover, gilt red morocco booklabel, inscription dated 1784) -- Baron Jérôme Pichon (bookplate, sale Paris 3-14 May 1897) -- Maurice Escoffier (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the earliest historical and bibliographical monograph on 16th-century Parisian typography, specifically the lives and work of Simon de Colines, Adrien Turnèbe, Michel Vascosan, the Morel clan, and Jean Bienné.
