First edition of Cassiodorus’ commentary on the Psalms. It is prefaced by a letter to the printer from the humanist Johann Heynlin in which he recognises that its linguistic style may not be in keeping with Renaissance eloquence but asks readers to look beyond style to substance. Greek and gothic types, one major initial in blue with red penwork decoration, other initials and paragraph marks in red or blue, some yellow capital strokes (minor paper flaw in 5 leaves, affecting a few letters in one, minor marginal repair in n3). Late 19th-century vellum, flat spine ruled in gilt and lettered in manuscript, sprinkled edges. Provenance: ?inscription removed from second leaf.
