RARE RUSSIAN WORK ON MATHEMATICS. MAGNITSKII, LEONTII FILIPOVICH (1669-1739). Arifmetika; sirech nauka chisliteinaia (Arithmetic, called the computational science). Moskva (Moscow), Sinodalna, 1703. Folio (280x170 mms). (19), 307 ll. Engraved frontispiece, 1 engraved plate by Mikhail Karnovskii. Lacking 1 plate (last plate). Frontispiece with repair to inner margin and right corner with loss, numerous woodcut figures in text, 3 folding letterpress tables (all with tear to middle and with some loss, 1 partly remargined). Printed in Cyrillic letters in red and black within typographic borders. Near contemporary half leather with marbled boards, spine with blindtooled decor in compartments, some minor damages. Title remargined with minor loss of inner frame, red seal in the margin and some minor marginal holes, 1 page with large repair with textloss, many leaves remargined or with some repairs, mostly to margins, some with loss of text, many leaves torn mostly to inner margins, staining and spotting. Old red seals to first free endpaper and to margins on a few leaves. Photo. Drage 390; Sopikov 99; Fekula 4950; Pekarskii 62; Smirdin-Sokolnikov Biblioteka 7. First edition of the first work on mathematics printed in Russia, and only the second non-religious book printed in Moscow. Arifmetika is considered one of the most important books printed during the reign of Peter the Great. It is the first Russian book to use Arabic numerals instead of the traditional Cyrillic alphabetic numbers. Served as the basic textbook on mathematics for over half a century. Lacking 1 plate.
