Maffei's celebrated Historiarum Indicarum first appeared in folio at Florence in 1588. This French translation followed an earlier one by Arnault de la Boirie issued at Lyon in 1603. Graesse IV, p. 334; Sabin 43783. BERGERON, Pierre (d. 1637). Voyages faits principalement en Asie dans les XII, XIII, XIV, et XV siècles, par Benjamin de Tudele, Jean du Plan-Carpin, N. Ascelin, Guillaume de Rubruquis, Marc Paul Venitien, Haiton, Jean de Mandeville, et Ambroise Contarini . The Hague: Jean Neaulme, 1735. 2 volumes in one, containing 11 parts, 4° (260 x 200mm). Title in red and black with vignette, and with the word 'premier' printed on an overlay. 5 folding engraved maps and 8 half-page engraved illustrations (some browning and spotting, without title-page to vol. II). 20th-century half calf, red edges. Provenance : W.R.D.D. Turnbull (signature, dated 1836, and inscription on endpaper: 'Duplicate sold/A very scarce and highly entertaining book') -- purchased from W. Heffer, Cambridge -- ANDRE ENGEL COLLECTION. Evidently from the same stock of printed sheets as the edition of 1729 issued by Pierre van der Aa, taken over by Jean Neaulme after van der Aa's death and re-issued with only a changed title and advertisement. Neaulme seems to have run short of title-pages, here adapting a title-page to volume II, with the word 'second' pasted over, as the title to volume I. Brunet I, 785; Cordier Sinica 1941-42; Lust 244. With 3 other works, J.-F. Dupleix, Mémoire pour le sieur Dupleix contre la Compagnie des Indes , Paris, 1759, 4°, rebound in an earlier vellum document, dated 1717, with secretarial signature of Louis XV; Johann David Michaelis, Recueil de Questions, proposées à une Societé de Savants, qui par ordre de sa Majesté Danoise font le voyage de l'Arabie , translated from German by J.B. Merian, 1774, 4°, contemporary calf, spine gilt; and Kasim Ibn Ali, called al-Hariri. Eloquentiae Arabicae principis tres priores consessus , Franquera, 1731, 4° (imperfect, lacks Y1-4, Z1), contemporary calf. (5)
