Mackenzie was a Scottish fur trader and explorer who in 1789 followed the Mackenzie River from the Great Slave Lake for 1,100 miles to the river's delta on the Arctic Ocean and is covered in his first journal. The second journal covers his journey over the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast of present-day British Columbia. These journeys constituted the first known transcontinental crossing of America north of Mexico and took place twelve years before the more famous Lewis & Clark Expedition.
