(Title laid down and with small hole affecting three letters, scattered spotting, P3-4 and R3 with inner margins repaired, a few words supplied in first three lines of P3.) 18th-century mottled calf, sides gilt with border, corner fleurons and cartouche, edges red (lacking label, corners rubbed, front joint cracked, front endleaf detached). Provenance : John Thynne, 3rd Baron Carteret of Hawnes (1772-1849, bookplate) -- F.H.L. Holt (fly-leaf signature). Printed within a few months of Antonio Blado's Rome edition, this second edition, THE FIRST PUBLISHED IN FLORENCE, contains an important dedicatory epistle by Giunti defending the book. Taddeo Gaddi had given Giunti the manuscript for Il Principe , and Blado the manuscripts for Discorsi and Istorie ; but Blado capitalized on his new audience and pre-empted Giunti's edition. This landmark of political philosophy casts a long shadow, but the other works in this collection are also of interest: La Vita di Castruccio depicts the ideal prince, and Il modo che tenne il Duca Valentino per ammazare Vitelozzo considers the politics of Cesare Borgia. EDIT-16 cites 2 copies: at the Biblioteca nazionale centrale in Florence, and at the Biblioteca dell'Accademia nazionale dei Lincei e Corsiniana in Rome.
