MACARTHUR, Douglas, Lieutenant General . Autograph letter signed ("Douglas"), as Superintendant, U.S. Military Academy, to Mrs. Louise Cromwell Brooks, West Point, [28 October 1921]. 3 pages, 8vo, U.S. Military Academy stationery, original postmarked envelope in MacArthur's hand. Mint condition. "I AM A PLAIN, ROUGH SOLDIER, MORE USED TO THE CAMP THAN TO THE HOME...MY MOTTO, 'DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY,' READS FROM NOW ON - 'DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY, LOUISE'" In a warmly affectionate love letter to his fiancee, Brigadier General MacArthur writes: "Sweetest of Women: Your letter telling me of your Mother's visit to Washington has just come. What a thoroughbred she is! She could not be otherwise, however, and have borne such a daughter. Give her my tenderest regards and tell her I shall accept her trust in the spirit of divine love in which she makes it. I am a plain, rough soldier, more used to the camp than to the home, but such as I am, I shall love, cherish and protect my wife with the smiles, breath, tears of all my days. Tell her how I respect you, how I love you, how I trust you! Tell her that of all the honors that have come to me, of all the honors that may come to me, her gift of you will be the greatest honor of my life. Tell her my motto, 'Duty, Honor, Country,' reads from now on - 'Duty, Honor, Country, Louise.' Tell her her trust is sacred and two together shall forever keep its vigil - my God and myself. I kiss your sweet lips good-night."
