Autograph letter signed to Charles Darwin, London, 22 October 1861 , on the ice barrier in the valley of Baques, and the geological and atmospheric construction of ice dams, citing the case at Lochaben 'where a shelf does not coincide with a "col" ... I cannot comprehend how it is to be reconciled with the ice or glacier-lake theory', 3½ pages, 12° ; Charles DARWIN (1809-1882). Autograph letter signed to Lyell, 'Thursday 6. Q. Anne St' , asking for a meeting on the following day, 1 page, 8° , integral address leaf. Together with 50 other autograph letters signed to Charles Lyell, his wife, father-in-law Leonard Horner and other members of the family including: Sir John HERSCHEL (1792-1871) to Charles Lyell, Collingwood, 1 July 1841 , commenting on 'your return from Yankiland', referring to a man name Everett who 'ought to have been an Englishman', and requesting a lecture on the geology of Armenia, 3 pages, 8° ; Michael FARADAY (1791-1867) to Lyell, Southampton, 13 March 1845 , forwarding a letter (not present), 1 page, 8° , integral blank; Robert BROWNING (1812-1889) to Mrs. Lyell, Harrow Road, 16 January 1863 , recommending two teachers of children, 1 page, 8° , integral blank, autograph envelope; Charles BABBAGE (1792-1871) to Mrs. Lyell, n.p. Jowett etc., approximately 70 pages, 4°, 8° and 12° , integral blanks, a few envelopes. Sir Charles Lyell, the noted geologist, was widely admired and had numerous friends from all walks of life.
