Frontispiece, hand-colored aquatints in vols. 2 and 3, 7 engraved plates including 2 hand-colored maps, one folding, numerous illustrations in text. (Dates effaced in first two vols.) Late 19th-century half sheep and marbled boards (vol. III rebound, light rubbing to edges). Vol. 1 states "In Two Volumes" as in the 3 vol. first edition. Lyell's doctrine of uniformitarianism. "Lyell insisted that the past must be interpreted in terms of the forces now in progress. Darwin, who took this work with him on the Beagle , acknowledged his debt to it" (Dibner, Heralds of Science 96); Grolier/Horblit 70; Norman 1398. (3)
