[Nürnberg : Hans Guldenmund], 1526. 4 o (184 x 140 mm). 22 leaves. 74 woodcut portraits by HANS SEBALD BEHAM ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, including one repeated on the title-page. (A3 closely trimmed, repaired marginal tear on E3, some pale browning and spotting, a few small stains.) Late 19th-century eggplant straight-grained morocco, title gilt-lettered on front cover and spine, edges gilt, by J. MacDonald, NY (some rubbing at extremities). Provenance : Robert W. Barrett (his sale Parke Bernet, 8 January 1952, lot 181, attributing the cuts to Lucas Cranach Emil Offenbacher agent); Cornelius J. Hauck (bookplate). This satire in verse, usually attributed to Hans Sachs, was originally published in Wittenberg in 1526 with fewer and different woodcuts; this is the first of several reprints in 1526. The preface and postscript in this edition are abridgements in verse of the Luther texts and, for some orders, the date of founding and the name of the founder have been added. The woodcut series shows the Pope, followed by figures presented in line of descending order; clerical dignitaris, the parson, and all the representatives of the different orders. Each figure carries its description at the top of the woodcut. Beneath each cut are 8 lines of descriptive verse.
