Lucianus Samosatensis. [Greek] Dialogi et alia multa opera quorum index est in proximis paginis. Imagines Philostrati. Eiusdem Heroica. Eiusdem Vitae sophistarum. Imagines Iunioris Philostrati. Descriptiones Callistrati. Venice: Heirs of Aldo Manuzio & Andrea Torresano, October 1522 Third edition of the Greek text and second, much improved Aldine edition of the great satirist. This copy was originally bound for Valentius Pannonius and features his name on the lower cover, probably Valentin Preuss vom Springenberg (1553-1601). He matriculated at Königsberg in 1583, became a doctor of medicine at Valencia in 1584, a physician at Elbing, and in 1588 the professor of medicine at Königsberg. Another volume from his library, containing the 1525 Aldine Xenophon bound with the 1501-1504 Aldine Philostratus, lettered XENOPHON | ET PHILO | STRA | TVS on the upper cover, and VALEN | TINI | PANNO | NII on the lower, was sold by Swann New York, 3 April 2008, lot 91.
Folio (320 x 212 mm). Greek and Roman type, 55 lines plus headline. collation: *4 α-ω8 αα-δδ8 εε2 ζζ-μμ8 νν6: 292 leaves. Initial spaces with guide letters, woodcut Aldine device on title-page and at end. (Light dampstaining, mainly marginal, primarily to first and last leaves, repaired tear to final leaf.)
binding: Roman brown morocco, 1520s (339 x 239 mm), panels laid into nineteenth-century binding, traces of gilt, border of repeated arabesque, band of repeated flower horizontally across head and tail of central panel, fleuron in corners, leaf at angles, in center a lozenge of repeated arabesque, toupper cover LVCIANVS | HOMINVM | ATQVE DEOR[M] | MAXIMVS DERISOR | SED RIDENTĒ | DICERE VER[M] | NIL | VETAT, to lower cover VALEN | TINI | PANNO | NII, marbled endpapers, blue edges. (Rebacked, lightly rubbed.)
