(First leaf somewhat soiled and with small holes, occasional light browning, occasional small stain, short wormtrack in last few leaves affecting some text.) 19th-century Italian sheep-backed pastepaper boards, flat spine gilt and with label, blue sprinkled edges (some wear at joints and spine ends). Provenance : some early interlinear annotations -- ?stamp washed for title. First edition with commentary by Johannes Sulpitius. The Pharsalia is second only to the Aeneid as the greatest Latin epic, and in his dedicatory letter, Sulpitius argues for Lucan's greatness to rival Virgil's.
