BINDING: contemporary French painted calf gilt, gilt fillet borders enclosing strapwork designs around central lozenges composed of hatched trefoil and leaf tools, spine with strapwork design terminated in hatched leaf tools, strapwork on boards and spine painted in red, green, yellow and white, gilt board edges, gilt edges (lightly rubbed causing slight loss of paint, skilfully re-jointed); modern brown cloth solander box. PROVENANCE: obscured inscription on upper pastedown dated 1836 -- Hugh Morriston Davies (1879-1965, collector and contributor to G.D. Hobson's Bindings in Cambridge Libraries , bookplate on upper pastedown dated in manuscript 1901, inscription on front free endpaper 'Italian Binding. 16 t h Cent? [?]Probably for Majoli?') -- gilt morocco bookplate on upper pastedown -- Bibliothèque d'un Amateur [i.e. Sczaniecki collection], sale, Drouot, 7 June 1974, lot 71. A MID-16TH-CENTURY FRENCH PAINTED STRAPWORK BINDING, and an excellent example of this type of decoration, often found on books printed in Lyons and therefore commonly attributed to Lyonese binders. The text is a reprint of Gryphius' 1546 edition of De bello civili , prefaced by a biographical notice taken from Petrus Crinitus' Poetis latinis , of which Gryphius had published an edition in 1543.
