CGC certified: VG (4.0). Off-white to white pages. Painted cover signed "DownSo." Art: Lee Ames, Robert Martinott, Tony DiPreta, Allen Baron, Sid Greene, Dick Rockwell. CGC census: Only one other graded copy (6.0), which was sold for $504 in March 2019. Simon and Kirby kickstarted the romance comics genre with 1947's Young Romance #1. The category boomed, and soon there were dozens of romance comics on the stands, including Lovers' Lane (which often featured more "sophisticated" painted and photo covers). "Teenage girls and young women were hungry for stories that plunged grimly and juicily into the contradictions of desire, duty, freedom, and loneliness that postwar love and marriage entailed." — G. Jones, Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters and the Birth of the Comic Book. Basic: 2004, p. 237. A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact [email protected] . Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2022 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Find out why PBA is the new fan-fave of comics auctioneers. "This is some of the best commentary I've yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books... Priceless." — R. Crumb.
