Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1979 Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1979 Excellent appearance, packed in 3 magnum original carton 64% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay and 10% oak fermented. In a hot, dry year, Pinot Noir is king. Late but excellent ripening with the harvest only beginning on 8 October. This has always been a wonderfully creamy wine, with hazelnuts and walnuts and stunning, honied length. I always feel that I could drink the whole bottle myself and just skip the meal, as it seems to be both a food and a wine. In 2009, it was all black truffles and dates on the nose, with real overtones of red Burgundy. Such extraordinary richness that it coats the mouth. Walnuts linger and there is huge volume and softness. This is an incredible wine of great dimension and a finish of clementines - a tremendous mouthful of flavour, with Roederer's underlying acidity. At the end of 2009, another bottle came my way, from the original disgorging date of September 1985. A wonderful spicy, cinnamon nose led to a great flavour of toasted brioche. An amazing mouthful of fresh apricots, with a huge walnut finish. It is now almost essence-like. Great finesse at the end - it dazzles with laciness combined with vinosity. Serena Sutcliffe, MW See illustration Lot 313 2 mags (oc) per lot: USD 4000-5500 Tsar Alexander II in 1876 was the inspiration for the covetable transparent bottle, but the Champagne is the result of Roederer's art and skill. All the grapes come from Roederer's own vineyards and the heady honey, vanilla, toffee and dried fruit delights of this sublime Champagne are a reflection of their superb sites. At other times, one can pickup hazelnuts, nougatine, truffles and peaches. Cristal always combines intense vinosity with glorious, lingering laciness. What is there not to like?
