ONE OF 50 LARGE-PAPER COPIES WITH HAND-COLOURED PLATES. Louis (or Ludovik) Choris, a Russian of German extraction, showed a talent for natural history at a remarkably early age, and won high praise for his work on Biberstein's journey to the Caucasus in 1813. The present views recall the voyage of the Rurik , 1815-1818, commanded by the Russian Otto von Kotzbue, and the expedition's search for the North-West passage, entering the Pacific via the Horn and returning to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. Choris, the official artist on the expedition, was invited by the St.Petersberg Academy to accompany Kotzbue and the present work represents a fine cross-section of the places that the expedition visited: it includes views of Teneriffe, Brazil, Chile, the Pacific Islands, Hawaii, Kamchatka, Philippines, the Cape of Good Hope and Saint Helena.
