Double-page engraved vignette, double-page engraved pictorial title, 34 (of 35) double-page engraved maps numbered in contemporary manuscript 1-3, 5-35 lacking plate 4 “Planesphaer: globi caelestis,” ALL COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Contemporary reddish-brown calf, covers elaborately tooled in silver to a rococo design (silver on binding oxidized, light wear to joints). A charming pocket atlas in a beautiful rococo binding. The table of contents lists 29 engraved maps, this copy with 6 additional maps. “Various opinions have been expressed concerning the publication date of this atlas: Bagrow gives 1778, Lister 1762, and the British Library 1750. There is a note on the first blank leaf of our copy, ‘P: Anselmus L Cellhamer Profess. Brauencell... Superior in Schwarzach emit die 20 Jan 1750,’ indicating that it cannot have been published at a later date” (Nordenskiöld). Bagrow-Skelton 258; Nordenskiöld 134; Phillips Atlases 631.
