Lots 464 to 466 Sir Misha Black OBE (1910-1977) and Professor Sam Black MBE (1915-1999) The brothers, Misha and Sam Black, were both pioneers in Britain's post-war design culture: Misha in industrial design and Sam in public relations. Misha and, his associates set up the Design Research Unit (DRU) in 1943, a multi-disciplinary design consultancy, and later he was one of the instigators of the Festival of Britain. Sam was head of Public Relations at the Association of Optical Practitioners, (AOP) between 1948 and 1955, and was a founder member of the Institute of Public Relations from 1948. Both were heavily involved with the Brussels Expo 1958: Sam organised the British exhibitors as head of public relations at the British, Electrical & Allied Manufacturers' Association, whilst the pavilion was designed by Misha and the DRU. Items relating to this period are included within the sale. The brothers' contribution to the successful development of post-war 'brand, Britain' was immense and they were both active educators in their respective fields. A collection of Design Research Unit Christmas cards, sent by Misha and Joan Black to Misha's brother, Sam, comprising: 1971, with a print 'Ziggurat' by Joe, Tilson, framed, 1973, with a print 'Untitled' by Sandra Blow framed, another with a print by Donald Hamilton Fraser unframed, another by Kenneth Martin unframed, together with two further prints, one by Ben Nicholson and one by Barbara Hepworth , both framed, all printed by Kelpra Studio., London (qty.) Provenance: Consigned by Patricia Black, Sam's daughter.
