Gomara's Historia de Mexico forms vol. II of the Steelsius 1554 edition of La Historia general de las Indias . An identical edition exists with the imprint of Juan Bellero, but both are distinct from the Nutius edition of the previous year. The author was one of the earliest and ablest of the Spanish historians of the New World. In 1540 he was the chaplain and secretary of Cortez, a position which gave him access to many documents which have since disappeared. This unparalleled access makes Gomara's history one of the richest of the early colonial period. Peeters-Fontainas 716; Sabin 27731 and cf. 27724: 'the work is indispensable to the student of Spanish affairs in America'; Palau VI, 141143.
