LONDON, Jack (1876-1916). The Call of the Wild . New York: Macmillan, 1903.
LONDON, Jack (1876-1916). The Call of the Wild . New York: Macmillan, 1903. Exceedingly rare advance copyright printing in wrappers of Jack London's most popular novel, preceding the first published edition. According to BAL, on March 28, 1903, the Copyright Office received two copies in paper, presumably an advance copyright printing. The Scribner Books Store catalogue description that accompanies this copy states: “The only copy recorded of this copyright edition, differing in text and setup from the published edition of the same year…Probably only twelve copies were ever printed.” The story’s first appearance following this printing was when it appeared serialized in the The Saturday Evening Post , 20 June-18 July 1903; the first published book edition was published in July 1903 (see following lot). 8vo. Printed on laid paper. Original printed gray paper wrappers (some minor rubbing and age-toning). These unillustrated and plainly bound copies would have been printed in a very limited number for copyright purposes only. No copy has appeared on the market and none are located at any institutional collections . See BAL 11876 note.
