The Clans of the Scottish Highlands, Illustrated by Appropriate Figures, Displaying Their Dress, Tartans, Arms, Armorial Insignia, and Social Occupations. London: Ackermann and Co., 1845-47. 2 volumes. Illustrated with 2 chromolithographed frontispieces in color, and 72 hand-colored lithographed plates after McIan. Folio (370 x 260 mm). Original full black morocco with elaborate and heavy gilt decoration, gilt dentelles, a.e.g. Front hinge of second volume cracked, one plate detached, light shelfwear to bindings, joints rubbed, a bright, attractive set. First edition in book form. Robert McIan ended his early career as an actor to devote his time to painting. His favorite subjects were the history and daily life of his native Scotland. He was elected an associate of the Scottish Royal Academy in 1852. Abbey Life 426 (parts issue); Tooley 322.
