(12 11/16 x 7 1/2 in.), contemporary speckled calf, blind-panelled in the Cambridge style, edges red-sprinkled, rebacked, old repairs to corners, rubbed, upper inner hinge weak, endpapers renewed, title repaired along gutter, slightly darkened, and with edges slightly frayed, marginal soiling to first and last 2 leaves and to B1, hole to 2G4 affecting about 8 letters, lower fore-corner of Q2 torn, short marginal tears to S4 and 2K2, occasional faint mostly marginal foxing . FIRST EDITION, first issue, with the cancelland title (containing the "Eliz. Holt" imprint, the "SS" of "Essay" correctly printed and the typographical ornaments aligned), the dedication undated. Inlaid at front is part of the original endpaper (from another copy or book?) bearing THE AUTHOR'S SIGNATURE, below is the armorial bookplate of Richard Palmer. Grolier English 36; Pforzheimer 599; PMM 164; Wing L-2738. Provenance : Contemporary ink corrections or additions to single words on A3v, A4r and Gg3v, probably not in the author's hand -- [Richard Palmer, bookplate as above] -- Robert Borthwick Adam, morocco bookplate (sale, Anderson, 15 February 1926, lot 242) -- Roderick Terry, morocco armorial bookplate (sale, American Art Association/Anderson, supply).
