This copy with Greek words stamped by hand on K6v and at the end of the play (I3r). 20 woodcut illustrations printed from 17 blocks, 2 full-page, 9 printed from three blocks each and one from two blocks. (Occasional light dampstaining in gutters, small hole to K3 catching a letter.) 19th-century quarter roan (worn, upper joint broken, front free endleaf loose.) Provenance : Edward Shipperdson (bookplate) -- Marshall Field (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. The Tragoedia de Turcis was one of the earliest Latin tragedies to appear in print, and the first to deal with the Turkish menace. Best known for his Latin translation of Brant's Narrenschiff , Locher lectured in poetry at Freiburg and Ingolstadt, edited several Latin authors, and wrote plays, of which four, including the present historical tragedy, were performed during his lifetime at Freiburg and Ingolstadt. The woodcuts of this edition, from Grninger's rich stock, include nine composed of blocks from his 1496 Terence, two from his Neue Narrenschiff (1494 and 1497), and six new cuts, in the style of the Master of the Terence, most of which were used again two years later in Locher's edition of Horace (see following lot).
