LIVIUS, TITUS. Historicus duobus libris auctus cum L. Fiori epitome, indici copiso, et annotatis in libros VII. Bell Maccedonici. [Preface by Erasmus and Ulrich von Hutten]. Mainz: Johannes Schoeffer, 1518. Woodcut border on both titles and a few large woodcut reverse historiated initials. Folio, 347 x 242 mm. (13 11/16 x 9½ in.), contemporary Parisian blind tooled dark brown morocco over wooden boards, spine ends expertly restored, some other minor restorations, portion of lower cover abraded; gutter margin and parts of lower and upper margin of first title restored, slight worming, mostly to margins on first 60 leaves. Adams L1321; Brunet III:1104. The most complete edition of Livy when published. This edition contains the first appearance in print of Livy's 33rd book, now lost and known only through this edition. Carbachius carefully revised and collated this work with the other printed editions. The original preface by Erasmus is of great importance for the history of printing. He claims that Peter Schoeffer (Johannes Schoeffer's grandfather) is the true inventor of printing, and that Mainz has the honor of having the first printing press.
