LIVIUS, Titus (59 B.C.-17 A.D.). Historiae Romanae decades , edited by Marcus Antonius Sabellicus. Venice: Bartholomaeus de Zanis, 20 June 1498. Super-chancery 2° (316 x 217mm). Roman type, woodcut initials. (A few wormholes affecting the text at the beginning and end, dampstaining.) 18th-century blindtooled calf over wooden boards, author's name on the lower edge (rebacked, a few wormholes, a little worn, missing 2 clasps). Provenance : Marcus Antonius Laparellius (18th-century inscription) -- Ricasoli Firidolfi (booklabel) -- Carlo Migliorini (bookplate). Marcus Antonius Sabellicus, the editor of this Titus Livius' Historiae , was a Venetian humanist and an historian. Following the examples of the Roman writer, he wrote in the 1470s a Venetian History depicting his city as the new Rome. HC(Add) 10142; Polain(B) 2500; Pr 5340; Goff L-248.
