LIVINGSTONE, David (1813-1873). Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa , London: John Murray 1857. 8° (224 x 135mm). Folding tinted lithographed frontispiece and 24 plates of which 2 tinted lithographs, 2 folding maps, one in rear pocket. (One map with short tear, frontispiece spotted, occasional light spotting and dampstaining). Original blind-stamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. (Lower joint with short split at head, edges lightly rubbed and bumped). Provenance : Silverlock (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on front free endpaper, "Revd D. G. Watt. With kindest salutations of his affectionate friend David Livingstone. London 28th October 1857". With a letter from D. G. Watt addressed to Livingstone at Albermarle Street, London, dated 6 November 1857, thanking him (Livingstone) for his "kind memorial in the form of your book" and stating he "was glad to see your likeness; and my bairns have been feasting themselves on the other pictures".
