Coster, (and general title, including the additional 6 pages (292*) between pp. 292 & 293. 24mo, 70 x 45 mm. (2¾ x 1¾ in.), contemporary red morocco, spine in 4 compartments each with floral central tool, elaborately gilt, covers richly gilt tooled with central and corner floral designs, surrounded by small ornamental border round sides, silver heart shaped clasp (with initals "E S" on inner side of catch), g.e., light wear to lower spine end. In this miniature prayer book appears for the first time a prose translation of the Hebrew poem Lekha Dodi ("come, my beloved") into Spanish. It is also the first translation of Lekha Dodi ever made into a modern European language. Since Lekha Dodi was not composed before 1571, it is obviously not to be found in the first translations of the Hebrew prayer book into Spanish published at Ferrara in 1552 and not at the first bilingual Hebrew-Spanish daily and shabbat prayer book published in Venice at the same year by Isaac Cavallero. Cavallero's bilingual prayer book was reprinted in Venice in 1622, still without Lekha Dodi. The Ferrara translation of the Daily and Shabbat services was reprinted a number of times by the presses established for the ex-Marranos in Amsterdam, from the beginning of the 17th through the second half of the 18th century. No one took the intiative of adding a Spanish translation of Lekha Dodi, which is the most recent addition to both the Sephardic and the Ashkenazic liturgies and perhaps the greatest contribution ever made by a sephardic poet to the Jewish prayer book. (cf. M.J. Benardete, Hispanic culture and character of the Sephardic Jews, New York, 1952, pp. 78, 95; and especially: H.P. Salomon, Lekha Dodi, The American Sephardi, vol. V, no. 1-2 pp. 33-42). At the time of publication of this miniature siddur there were only circa 100 Portugues Jews in the Hague, only very few Portuguese liturgical works were printed there and probably in a very limited number.
