Buildings include: California Theatre, Pacific Rolling Mills, Mission Woolen Mills, Cornell Watch Co., West Coast Furniture Co., Bank of California, Kimball Manufacturing Company, Gold Hill, Cal. Silk Factory, Palace Hotel. Ralston was born in Ohio in 1826. He worked as a ship-carpenter building steamboats before he arrived in California in 1850 via Panama. After working as an agent for the Garrison & Morgan line of steamships he went into banking, rising to become President of the Bank of California. Ralston died under mysterious circumstances in 1875 during a time of financial stress. The present lithographic tribute was issued by the San Francisco News Letter. No copies are listed in OCLC, though there is a description in Calisphere, citing the contributing institution as the California State Library. Provenance: Charles A. Fracchia Collection. The Korbel brothers, of wine and champagne fame, were major entrepreneurs in California in the 19th century. They began as cigar box makers and became timber magnates. When the market for their lumber cooled down, they converted much of their land to vineyards in the early 1880s. This lithograph was printed by them.
