[Literature] Dickens, Charles The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. In two volumes. First edition, first issue in book form (including all seven of Smith's first issue points). 8vo. xiv, (ii), 306; (ii), 307-609 pp. Extra-illustrated, with two frontispieces (first and second state), two vignette title-pages (first and second state), and 107 plates (in numerous states, many representing all state variations), by Robert Seymour Robert William Buss and Hablot Knight Browne as well as a complete suite of 32 plates by Thomas Onwyn (signed "Sam Weller"). Full crushed navy blue levant, stamped in gilt, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, top and bottom front joint of first volume rubbed, corners lightly worn to same, front joint of second volume worn; all edges gilt; by Riviere & Son; scattered minor spotting to text and plates; old ownership signature at head of second vignette title in first volume. Smith I-III; Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 3-88. A handsome set.
