LISZT, Franz (1811-1886). Two autograph letters signed ('F. Liszt'), in German, the first to [Adolph Stron], Weimar, 26 October 1855, thanking him for a 'charming and poetic gift' ('Ihre liebeswürdige poetische Gabe'), and looking forward to similar riches in his own garden now that it is autumn, 'Mit den HerbstBlättern sollten auch allmälig einige Früchte in meinem Garten heranreifen ...', promising goodwill and diligence on the part of the gardener, one page, 8vo , bifolium; the second addressed to [Carl Riedel], n.p., [6 April 1885], recommending a composition by Heritte Viardot based on Victor Hugo's Le feu du Ciel , and listing the pianists for his next concert: 'of the fair sex, Madame Montigny Remaury, Fräulein Lina Schmalhausen, Fräulein Koch: of the not fair (male) sex: Sgambati, Scharwenke, Reuss. / The remaining pianists recommended by you may rest easy [sollen bequem pausiren]', especially a certain virtuoso recommended by Herr Ibach, two pages, 8vo . Provenance : the first letter from the collection of Dr Fritz and Dita Callomon, and thence by gift; the second letter Thommen, Basel, 1955, catalogue 57, no.20, then Walter Benjamin Autographs, New York.
