Beschreibung:

LISZT FRANZ: (1811-1886) Hungarian composer, pianist and teacher of the Romantic period. A fine A.L.S., F. Liszt, four pages, 8vo, n.p. (Weimar?), n.d. (1850), to [Theodor Uhlig], in German. Liszt explains that he returned from Eilsen a few days ago and apologises for the late delivery of his correspondent's piano score for Lohengrin, explaining 'Frankly speaking I couldn't make up my mind to let the work out of my hands, and after the score which I necessarily needed for copying, remained here, it was impossible for me to use another copy', Liszt continues to write 'Maybe Wagner has written something to you about my long Lohengrin essay, which I sent to him in Zurich. At the end of February, the essay will be published as a brochure, and if you allow, a few copies shall be sent to you in Dresden. While re-reading I found it still too unpretentious for Wagner, but after he expressed his complete satisfaction openly and clearly to me, I don't want to wait longer to publish it. In March or April at the latest I hope we can welcome Tichatscheck as Lohengrin, and I am looking forward very much for this evening. In the meantime, in anticipation of this proximate event, give him my best regards. I have read your excellent essay on Wagner's writings in the Brendel[schen] Musikalischen Zeitung with great interest - and I wish you that Wagner, by releasing his new book, gives you cause to promote these ideas…..' In a lengthy postscript Liszt further adds 'For your favourable information concerning the autograph I am very grateful and will make use of it, probably next summer, when I think some of them are going to be finished. At the moment I am very busy with local matters in Weimar. Among other things I have, for the birthday of the Grand Duchess on 16th February, to study the opera of Raff and I promise myself a lot of good and interesting things from it. I can say that with a perfectly good conscience, that among the many new scores which have been sent here for 3 years, not a single one is equal with Konig Alfred, and most likely on the 16th February Raff will be pleased by a brilliant and well-deserved applause'. A letter of excellent musical content, not least for the references Liszt makes to his close friend Richard Wagner
