Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow were married on 27 May 1929. Over the next two years, the celebrity couple traveled throughout the country, Charles as a consultant for Transcontinental Air Transport and Pan American Airways. He also taught Anne to fly. In the winter of 1930–1931, the couple envisioned a new adventure, a flight to Japan by way of the north Pacific, with Anne would be the co-pilot and radio operator. They spent six months preparing for the trip, prioritizing items to pack, and studying maps and charts, as Lindbergh had in 1927 for the trans-Atlantic flight. On July 28, 1931, they took off, charting a course over Ontario and the Northwest Territories of Canada. They then flew over the Bering Sea. In August, they arrived on Hokkaido Island, Japan. Charles and Anne continued their travels through China, which included relief work, but the expedition was discontinued when news reached them of the death of Anne’s father, Senator Dwight Morrow. Before leaving, Chiang Kai-shek awarded Charles and Anne the National Medal.
