LINDBERGH, Charles A. Portion of map of North Atlantic Ocean, Northwestern Sheet, trimmed to trapezoidal shape, inscribed and initialed, ("Unused portion of chart for New York-Paris flight, 1927, C.A.L."). Illustrated in beige, 35 in. top edge, 29 in. left edge, 13 in. right edge, 38 in. bottom edge . A Map used by Lindbergh to plan his Historic 1927 flight from New York to Paris. This is the surviving portion of the map of the North Atlantic ocean, spanning Bell Island in upper Hudson Bay to Greenland in the east, which Lindbergh used to map his course across the North Atlantic in May 1927. While the entire map was crucial in his planning, only the missing fragment made it with him into the cockpit of The Spirit of St. Louis , where space was at a minimum and every ounce of gear counted against the plane's fuel supply and flying time. After mapping his course, he took with him only the portion of the map covering the span of the Atlantic over which he would actually fly.
