LINDBERGH, Charles A. General Map of the United States SIGNED ("LINDBERGH") AND INSCRIBED: "USED IN LAYING OUT COURSE FOR FLIGHT OF THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS FROM SAN DIEGO TO NEW YORK, 1927." Rand McNally General Map of the United States. 46¼ x 65¾, in original red cloth folding case . LINDBERGH'S MAP OF THE CRUCIAL FIRST LEG OF HIS JOURNEY TO PARIS AND IMMORTALITY SAN DIEGO TO NEW YORK: MAPPING THE TEST RUN OF THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS. When the Spirit of St. Louis came to life in the Ryan Aeronautical factory in late April 1927, Lindbergh did not have long to get it ready for his trans-Atlantic jump to Paris. He would have to test it on the cross-country flight from San Diego to Long Island, and here is the map he used to plot that trip in his own hand, making a straight line from San Diego to New York--and, intriguingly, extending a little beyond into the open water of the Atlantic. He also notes the mileage. Lindbergh made some two dozen test flights of Spirit of St. Louis before heading to New York, ranging in duration from a few minutes to over an hour. He especially wanted to make the trip overnight to accustom himself to night flying while fatigued. He broke an endurance record in the first leg of his journey, going 1500 miles from San Diego to St. Louis in 14 hours, 25 minutes without stopping. After a short overnight rest, he took off early the next morning and flew 7 hours, 22 minutes to New York, arriving at Curtiss Field on Long Island. There he rested--or tried to rest--amidst a growing media circus, and unfavorable weather patterns, until taking off from Roosevelt Field--and barely clearing the runaway--on the morning of 20 May 1927.
