Hindhaugh, Washington, D.C., 16 October [1861]. 1 page, 8vo, mounted onto a larger card, personal stationery embossed "ML" with red border, some light spotting, otherwise fine. MARY LINCOLN AND A "SUMMER SUIT" FOR THE PRESIDENT, WITH A FABRIC SAMPLE A stern First Lady attempts to rectify an invoice sent by the tailors, Messrs. Hindhaugh & Co., who had billed the Lincolns for two suits, one not ordered by them: "It is now brought to our recollection that whilst passing through New York [on their way to Washington for Lincoln's inauguration], last February, that Mr [William S.] Wood had the President measured for a suit of clothes, unordered & uncalled for, as he was well supplied with clothing. In the summer, I requested Mr Wood, to select a summer suit for him, which he did & is on your bill." In a postscript she adds: "I mention this to assure you, that if we had ordered the 'said suit,' your bill would have been settled some time since." [ With: ] WOOD, William S. Hindhaugh & Co., Washington, D.C., 27 June 1861. 1 page, oblong, mounted stains, WITH AN ORIGINAL CLOTH SAMPLE attached to lower left, with partial stamped envelope. The original letter from Mr. Wood referred to by Mrs. Lincoln in her letter of 16 October, in which he orders the President's "summer suit." Wood writes: "It is the wish of the President that you make for him a full suit of the accompanying material, without lining, and have it here as soon as you conveniently can." Attached at the bottom of Wood's letter is a small fabric sample of gray, salt-and-pepper pattern suit fabric, 20 x 36mm. (.5/8 x 1.3/8 in.) (2)
