In very fine condition. LINCOLN PARDONS A CONFEDERATE OFFICER President Lincoln "...authorize[s] and direct[s] Secretary of State [William H. Seward] to affix the seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of Benjamin C. Robertson, dated this day, and signed by me: and for so doing this shall be his warrant." Robertson was a Confederate officer from Tennessee; Lincoln had requested the pardon from Attorney General Edward Bates the day before (see Lincoln, Collected Works, 2nd Suppl., p.87). The circumstances which moved Lincoln to seek the man's pardon are unknown; apparently, though, Robertson died before his pardon could be effected.
