LINCOLN, Abraham, President . Autograph note signed ("A. Lincoln, a member of Congress") as Representative for Illinois, n.p., 6 January 1848. 1 page, irregular oblong, 195 x 102 mm. "A. LINCOLN, A MEMBER OF CONGRESS" CERTIFIES THE SIGNATURE OF HIS FRIEND EDWARD D. BAKER Whig Congressman Lincoln pens a short note: "I certify that the above signature, purporting to be that of Col. E[dward] D. Baker, is genuine." Above his note is the signature of Colonel Baker: "E D Baker." Edward Dickinson Baker (1811-1861) was a close personal friend of Lincoln. His election to the state legislature in Illinois as a Whig brought him into close association with Lincoln, as both a friend and at times a rival. In 1843 both Lincoln and Baker sought to run for the United States House of Representatives from Illinois. By a secret pact between the candidates, Baker won the nomination and was elected the following year, assuming his seat in Congress in December 1845. At the time of the next election, Baker agreed with some reluctance to honor the spirit of their pact and let Lincoln take a turn in the Congressional seat. He moved to the West Coast, served as Senator from Oregon and was appointed Brigadier General. In the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Va., 22 October 1861, he was ambushed and killed in action "in a brave but tactically inept operation."(Boatner)
