Waite, Springfield, Illinois, 30 May 1860. 1 page, 8vo, integral blank, enclosed in custom-made half blue morocco folding protective case. THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT STATES HIS "TRUE CHRISTIAN NAME" An intriguing letter, no doubt in response to one of the many letters received by Lincoln after he became a Presidential candidate: "Dear Sir You ask for my true Christian name. It is Abraham. Yours truly A. Lincoln." On May 18, on the third ballot, the Republican party convention in Chicago nominated Lincoln for President, over the front-runner, William Seward of New York (later Lincoln's Secretary of State). Lincoln's formal acceptance was penned on May 23, and in the course of the next few weeks, he received and individually answered many letters from supporters. When the volume of this mail swelled to unmanageable proportions, he was assisted by his wife Mary, who penned some replies for his signature, as well as John Nicolay. Provenance : Creighton C.
