The top portion consists of a signed statement by Justice of the Peace James Harriot in the case of Abraham Lincoln vs. Daniel Hall . Lincoln is seeking to recover a total of $49.35 from Hall (a $40.00 judgement, plus $4.60 interest from June 1853 and court costs of $4.75). Beneath Harriot's accounting, Lincoln, certifies that: "Abraham Lincoln, the plaintiff in the above described judgement, being first duly sworn states an oath that the judgement has not, nor has any part of it, been paid to him, nor to any other person for him, so far as he knows or believes." Below, Jonathan Gridley, Court Clerk, affirms: "Subscribed and sworn to before me..."
