THREE WEEKS BEFORE HIS DEATH, Lincoln signs this consular appointment--using his full signature--naming John Hutchinson "of Dakota Territory," a consul to the American legation at Leghorn in the Kingdom of Italy. Hutchinson was a former law student of Seward and a fervent abolitionist. He joined the anti-slavery settlers who moved to Lawrence, Kansas in the 1850s to try and out-vote the pro-slavery forces. He briefly served as acting governor of the Dakota Territory in 1863, and served in Italy until 1869 and returned to the U.S. to engage in the practice of law in Chicago until his death in 1887. A fine, bold Lincoln signature on an impressive appointment.
