LINCOLN, Abraham. Partly printed document accomplished, endorsed and signed on verso ("Abraham Lincoln"), with a second signature ("Abraham Lincoln") in text on recto, also signed by JOHN T. STUART (1807-1885, Lincoln's first law partner and political mentor) as witness, and by DAVID DAVIS (1815-1886, later Lincoln's campaign manager and executor), as attorney for Levi and Lucy Ann Davis, Logan County, Illinois, 6 October 1851. 1 page, oblong folio (12½ x 15¾ in.), accomplished in ink on specially printed Indenture form, with the requisite State of Illinois attestation at bottom, printed in several types (Gothic headings, body in roman), ENDORSED AND SIGNED on verso: "Levi Davis & wife Deed to Abraham Lincoln." In very fine condition. LINCOLN AS LAND SPECULATOR An imposing indenture, very carefully filled in in a clear hand. It records the sale by Levi and Lucy Ann Davis (apparently relatives of David Davis of several lots in Bloomington, Illinois (where the judge resided), to the young Abraham Lincoln. The Davises, of Alton, sell to "Abraham Lincoln, of the City of Springfield, in the County of Sangamon," for $325.08 "those lots or parcels of land known and described as follows...in Evans' Addition to the late town now City of Bloomington, in the County of McLean...." Below are the usual subscriptions; the Davises certify that the lots are "free and clear of all encumbrances of every kind." David Davis signs as attorney for Levi and Lucy Ann Davis.
