Lincoln's use of such a large sum of cash is something of a mystery. The following day he received a delegation of women from the Philadelphia Sanitary Fair, and perhaps gave them a donation. Interestingly, he wrote another check to "Self" on 18 February 1865 for $761 (Ex-Sang Collection, Christies, 10 December 1999, lot 187). Only four other checks to "Self" have appeared since 1974. This is one of the finer examples of a Lincoln presidential check to appear in recent years. Provenance : Lincoln Isham (1892-1971), Lincoln's great-grandson ; by gift to Dr. Illsley S. Zecher (30 June 1952 ALS from Isham to Dr. Zecher, included with the lot); by descent to the present owner.
