LINCOLN, Abraham]. HERNDON, William H. (1818-1891), Lincoln's law partner . Document signed ("William F. Herndon"), TEXT IN THE HAND OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, Sangamon County, Illinois, 25 October 1850.
LINCOLN, Abraham]. HERNDON, William H. (1818-1891), Lincoln's law partner . Document signed ("William F. Herndon"), TEXT IN THE HAND OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, Sangamon County, Illinois, 25 October 1850. 1 page, an oblong (4½ x 8½ in.), top headed "State of Illinois Sangamon County," 14 lines of additional text on verso in Lincoln's hand, small chip missing on left edge, old mends from back. LINCOLN AND HERNDON SEEK AN EVICTION. "William H. Herndon, being first [duly] sworn, states on oath that he did on the 22nd day of October A.D. 1850, personally serve Isaac S. Button, the defendant to the within declaration, who is the actual occupant, and claims title to the premises for which the within plaintiffs declare, by delivering to him a true copy of the foregoing declaration and notice..." On the verso is a lengthy text (incomplete) entirely in Lincoln's hand. It describes the case in detail, involving defendant Isaac S. Buton, who has been held on a plea of Trespass & Ejectment over a certain half lot in a named tract. A legal document dating from Lincoln's last and most famous partnership with William Henry Herndon (1818-1891), later his controversial biographer. The Lincoln-Herndon association began in 1844 and lasted until Lincoln became the Republican presidential nominee in 1860.
